Primarily, Para-equestrian includes any discipline practiced by an individual with a disability. Equitation helps to develop motor skills and balance. For their safety in competitions, Para-equestrian athletes use specially designed harnessing and tack.
Para-equestrian Driving and Dressage are two disciplines governed by the FEI (International Equestrian Federation) since 2006. However, only Para-equestrian Dressage is an official Paralympic discipline since 1996.
Equine Canada also recognizes Para-equestrian, the eighth discipline regulated by the FEI, as a high performance sport.
