Show jumping : Derek Braun takes the lead in the Open Jumper 1m50

Bromont, July 19, 2013 – American Derek Braun took the lead in the Jumper 1m50 event on Friday July 19 at the Bromont Olympic Equestrian Park.

The course, by world renowned designer Guilherme Jorge (Brazil), proved a real challenge for all international riders participating in this second FEI event: with 12 jumps and 15 efforts, including a demanding triple combination as well as a double. Of the twenty-one starting, only three pairs qualified for the jump-off round.

Second in the ring, Canadian Ainsley Vince executes the first clear round in the time allowed. She stays on top of the leader board until the sixteenth opponent, when rider Derek Braun (USA) executes a perfect round in 80.81 seconds. Colombian Roberto Teran will join them in the jump-off qualifying on his second mount, Woklahoma.

Difficult conditions

This afternoon’s event was quite demanding for the riders and horses, with high winds blowing on the competition grounds. Because of uncertain weather, the Canadian Equestrian Team Medal class was postponed until Saturday evening, July 20.

First out for the jump-off, Ainsley Vince gets 4 jumping faults dropping a bar in the double combination: despite an excellent time, she leaves the door opened for her competitors Braun (USA) and Teran (COL).

Derek Braun, on Lacarolus, uses prudence while realizing that too slow a round would give Teran a chance to steal first place. With a clear round in 43.14, he takes the lead away from Ainsley Vince. Last in the ring, Roberto Teran, sees his chances of besting Braun disappear early when his mount, Woklahoma, refuses the first fence.
